Edison's Talking Dolls Can Now Provide The Soundtrack To Your Nightmares
"Back in 1890, Thomas Edison gave us some of the world's first talking dolls. Today, the glassy-eyed cherubs that are still around stand about 2 feet tall; they have wooden limbs and a metal body; and they sound supercreepy. (If you're looking for a soundtrack to your nightmares, listen to the audio story above.) Edison built and sold about 500 of them back in 1890. Now, new technology has made hearing them possible for the first time in decades.
Jerry Fabris, who curates sound recordings at the Thomas Edison National Historical Park, says part of what makes the recordings so unsettling is that they were most likely read by a female factory worker imitating a little girl. "

French Vending Machines Dispense Short Stories Instead Of Snacks
"Many have lamented the lost art of reading in our social-media-driven, content-hungry world, but few have actually tried to do anything about it.
But whether or not you think people aren't reading long-form material as much as they used to, you can probably still get excited about free reading material. In Grenoble, France, a city known as the capital of the French Alps, a publishing start-up called Short Édition has installed eight free story-dispensing vending machines in some of its most popular public spaces."
"The strange, screen-less contraptions are the brainchild of Christophe Sibieude (the co-founder and head of Short Édition) and Grenoble's mayor, Éric Piolle. The pair hope that commuters and bystanders will make use of these stories to expand and enrich their minds while waiting around, rather than tapping their way aimlessly through Facebook or Twitter. Stories are dispensed according to how much time you've got to spend reading (one-, three-, and five-minute options are available), and the stories are printed out on long receipt-like paper."

We Were Totally Wrong About What's Happening Inside Earth's Mantle
For the first time, geologists have compiled a global map of the wave-like motions called “convective currents” inside Earth’s mantle. They found that those convective currents are moving roughly ten times faster than previously thought. The discovery can help explain everything from how Earth’s surface changes over time to the formation of fossil fuel deposits to long-term climate change.
“In geological terms, the Earth’s surface bobs up and down like a yo-yo,” geologist Mark Hoggard of Cambridge University said in a statement. Hoggard is lead author on a paper published today in Nature Geoscience.
Our planet’s deep interior is an enduring scientific mystery. Having never drilled more than a few miles beneath the surface of the Earth, geologists rely on indirect measurements and models to get a sense of what’s happening further down. The mantle is a nearly 3000 kilometer (2000 mile) layer of gooey, compressed rock, and convective activity within it has a big impact on Earth’s surface.

Another Human Torch Joins the MCU
Michael B. Jordan—who played the Human Torch in Fox's Fantastic Four reboot—has reportedly been cast in Marvel's Black Panther.
Jordan and director Ryan Coogler are no strangers; the duo worked together on Creed and Fruitvale Station. It's not immediately clear who Jordan will play in the film, though a source at The Hollywood Reporter mentioned he could play a villain. Marvel had no comment on the role.
Jordan will be the second Human Torch actor to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The first was Captain America himself, Chris Evans, who played Johnny Storm in 2005's Fantastic Four and its 2007 sequel. Although the Fantastic Four characters are Marvel properties, they're licensed to Fox—making them off-limits in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Chadwick Boseman, who appeared as Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War, will lead the film. It was reported yesterday that Star Wars: The Force Awakens actress Lupita Nyong'o is in talks to star alongside him.

The 5 Worst Mothers From Nintendo Games
Being a good or bad mother is pretty subjective. For instance, I think I'm a great mother, but the state of California disagrees with me. (It also disagrees that my mint-in-box Star Wars: Attack of The Clones action figures constitute children and say that claiming them as dependents is "Tax Fraud".) But there are some mothers who are definitely no good, and nowhere is the need for better motherly love more pressing than in the Nintendo universe. Here are the crummiest moms in Nintendo history!

The Best Thing to Come Out of Gods of Egypt Is Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther
Like Ryan Reynolds picking up an issue of Deadpool only to see the character describe himself as looking like “cross between a Shar-Pei and Ryan Reynolds,” after being given the comics by an executive on Blade: Trinity,Chadwick Boseman has his own story of being given comics of his comic book role.
On Live with Kelly and Michael, Boseman told this story about the “sign” he got:
I got in a conversation with the security on set for this movie called Gods of Egypt in Australia, and we didn’t really even talk about Black Panther at all, but he had them put the first issue of Black Panther - his original issue from when he was a kid - in my trailer and wrote a note that said, ‘you’re going to get this role’.
Alberta Wildfires Expected to Double In Size and Burn for Months
“In no way is this fire under control,” Alberta Premier Rachel Notley said on Saturday, “Officials tell us the fire may double in size in the forested areas today. As well, it may actually reach the Saskatchewan border.”
So far, 80,000 people have been evacuated from Fort McMurray since the fire began on May 3. Officials said that they hope to complete evacuations of the area by this weekend. Despite a state of emergency being declared in Alberta, some residents have refused to leave. For those who have left, it might be a while before they can return.

The new Battlefield has been announced!
"In a blog post, EA said Battlefield 1 contains some of the largest and "most dynamic battles in FPS history" and will include battles on land, in the air, and in the sea. "Tanks, planes, machine guns, artillery – a lot of the tech you've used in other Battlefield games was perfected during this era, letting the classic Battlefield DNA shine through," EA wrote. Locations confirmed so far include France, Italy, and the Arabian Desert.
Battlefield 1 will include dogfighting in biplanes and airships with external manned guns, as well as the World War I staples you'd expect like trench warfare, French tanks, mustard gas, and gas masks. Melee combat will be more of a focus, with weapons including a spiked baton, trench shovel, rapier, and more.
There will be a Persistent Squad System to allow four players to form a squad and enter matchmaking together to guarantee they're grouped for an entire session."

First U.S. Death Related to Zika Virus Reported
A Puerto Rican man in his 70s who died from complications of the Zika virus was the first case of his kind in the U.S., The New York Times first reported on Friday.
The man’s case was one of 683 confirmed Zika infections in Puerto Rico, according to the Centers for Disease Control. The outbreak includes 89 pregnant women.
Deaths are not particularly common when it comes to Zika—the main worry about the virus is its potential link to birth fetal malformations and neurological disorders in newborns. Transmitted primarily by Aedes mosquitoes, there is no vaccine for Zika; the best form of prevention is avoiding mosquito bites.
That's a Rap! Review #1
"This that who dat against who askin'? Boo-yea again!"
Hip Hop is dead? Possibly, if you've put your trust in the shooter....
A quarter of the Hip-Hop supergroup, Slaughterhouse, Royce Da 5'9 has been a denizen of the industry for 15 years. Anyone whose listened to him until this point: You will not be disappointed. If not, you will be elated by Royce's intricate manipulation of subject material and immaculate wordplay.
To clarify, though this is easily an accessible and enjoyable work of art, there are depths to this release that many may not grasp given their level of attentiveness. That being said, Royce has never positioned himself as a mainstream linguist and his scattershot flow is certainly distinctive. Like his last project, (PRhyme), I believe it will draw in whomever decides to click play.
From the beginning, you know that something special is about to take place. When the plucking of strings begin in "Black History", you intially question the direction of the project. I will tell you now, YOU ARE DEAD WRONG. This is a coverless book and judging before digging in is a fool's mistake. The production on the entire EP is ridiculously top notch. It sounds like an album. Salute to Jahlil Beats, Araabmuzik, Nottz, Jake One, and Mr Porter. They've done amazing work.
Back to Royce....this grimey bastard. Ha! As you will undoubtedly hear, his sincerity will be beating the shitbricks out of beats. The very first song it is baffling how he is able to weave his story of being a baby with a collapsed lung to how they've diagnosed his first-born with ADHD. Continuing from there, he seamlessly transitions to a description of how the famed pair, Gangstarr, came to be. Then it's all in from there! He appropriately beasts all over "Savages" then goes into my favorite track from the project, "Dead President Heads".
What he is able to accomplish in the finite time of an instrumental is utterly ridiculous. Seriously. On track 3, he even takes a shot (in my opinion) at one of Hip Hop's darlings, J. Cole. Royce rhymes, "I ain't rock with an Entourage since '07/Niggas diss Marshall after they copy his whole preference/Like we won't send an actual firing squad to they studio/That'll Basquiat they whole session." Given that Cole name-dropped Em on 2014 Forest Hills Drive, "Fire Squad", I'd be a fool to think otherwise. Royce has a hell of a good time with this tack and it obvious when he says, "Relax junior/You still think you in high school, but you not/But you will be lookin' at your last New Year/ Ha, booyea!". Don't even make me mention the "kick game" line...
There's also extremely personal material on display here. "Tabernacle", following the unbelievably awesome "Universe (Interlude)", is one of Royce's most powerful and deliberate tracks to date. On it, he describes meeting Marshall Mathers, the birth of his first son and losing his grandmother all on the SAME DAY. I honestly just have to tell you to listen. This is as real as an artist can get:
From here, the assault continues on. Even the bonus track is bouncy and entrancing in its own right. Honestly, this is some of his better work in the past few years and I truly can't recommend it enough. Also, if you truly enjoyed this EP, make sure to buy his new album, Layers, in store and online now!!!
